What began as a personal journey for me has transformed into a deep desire to help others.

My Journey (TRIGGER WARNING : ED)

I started weightlifting in a very toxic mindset. I was severely underweight and struggling with Orthorexic Bulimia— not only would I restrict the foods I ate based off of perceived levels of purity (bread=devil, lean protein & veg=god), but I would proceed to purge the “pure” foods if I consumed enough to make me feel full. I hated the feeling of being full because it made me feel heavy, it made me feel as though I had transgressed and needed to repent.

That mindset made me lose nearly 20 pounds in just about two months. I was incredibly unhealthy and struggling to change. So, I started weightlifting— but, that soon became its own struggle. I did 100 rep sets of squats, never took rest days, and three-hour gym sessions were the norm. I would do two HIIT workouts in my dorm room as a “warm up” before heading to the gym for a full session upwards of 500 reps. It was pure insanity and my body was suffering. I lost my period, I lost muscle, and I was losing my mind. I knew that something had to change.

I finally decided to go to a personal trainer with my friend. The two of us split the cost (it was EXPENSIVE) and we trained together. We trained three times per week and that was it. Three times per week?! I begged my trainer to let me do more on the other days. She told me it would hinder my growth, but my disordered thoughts couldn’t fathom that. She told me rest was crucial to muscle development. If I wanted to gain muscle, I had to rest. I kept arguing, but she wouldn’t budge (and she was right not to!). She finally agreed that I could do 10 minutes of ab exercises if I absolutely had to do something. Within the first week of training only three times per week, I gained three pounds of muscle and lost one pound of fat. My body was thanking me for finally resting. Resting and eating. I upped my calorie intake to about 2300. Within the next few months, I put on nearly 20 pounds of muscle.

Now, three years later, I’m a NASM Certified Personal Trainer and I am eternally grateful for that trainer who laid down the law for me. I needed someone to tell me how to exercise properly and how to get the results I desired. She helped reframe exercise and food for me in a way that no one else could. And that’s what I want to do for others now, what I want to do for you.
